In 1883, he and his family departed Antwerp enroute to
Bordeaux, France and on to the port of New Orleans, USA arriving there on
September 10, 1883. On the ship
manifest there is listed those persons other than his immediate family that
accompanied them to the New World; from
Reunion of Jeff and Theresa Thiels Family
September 10, 1883, the French liner USS Marsielles sailed
from the Port of Antwerp, Belgium.
Aboard this ship was Henricus and Mary Thiels and their five children. The ship docked at the Port of New Orleans
in mid-December. Henry and Mary walked
off the ship with their children, including their small son, Jeff, planted
their feet firmly on American soil, and called it home. Little did anyone realize at that time, that
this small boy would someday be the father of a family, that would span the
earth.
Jeff married Theresa Verzwyvelt, daughter of Amandus and
Josephine. The marriage was performed by Father Girards in St. Francis Xavier
Cathedral on January 17, 1906.
The young couple made their home with Henry and Mary on Bayou
Rapides, near what is now the VFW Home.
The family farmed together until 1926, when Jeff took his family and
moved to another farm located where England Air Force Base (England
International Airport) is today.
The Thiels family had their reunion on March 17, 1984, at
Harold Miles Park. One hundred seven
people attended. Seven of the brothers
and sisters attended with each of their families. Mass was held with Father Camella from St. Martin at Lecompte.
Memories of the Family Life of
Jeff Thiels and Theresa Verzwyvelt and their 10 children
Jeff and Theresa were married in the St. Francis Cathedral on
January 17, 1906.
They made their first home with his parents, Henry and Mary
Thiels, on Bayou Rapides, near what is now the VFW Home. Jeff farmed with his father until 1926, when
he took his family and moved to a farm located where England Air Force Base is
today.
The farm was owned by Dr. Marvin Cappel and we rented it for a
Forth of the crop. Papa and the boys
did all the plowin with mules. Mama and
the girls did the hoeing and all other chores.
All the farming was done with mule teams until 1936 when they bought a
John Deere Tractor. Rick and Pauline married
on Jan 8, 1930. They lived next door
and farmed with Papa.
The family went into the Dairy Business in 1937 and it was a
big job. It made no difference how late
we stayed at a dance on Friday or Saturday night, we still had to be in the
barn milking at 4 a.m. Mike always told
that we would wake up when one of the cows slapped us in the face with her tail
full of cockle burrs.
We only stayed in the Dairy Business a few years. Papa died in 1938 when he was 57 years
old. Mama and the rest of the family
moved to the Hudson Plantation on Belgard Bend Road. By this time Rick, Mike, Sis, Deany and Gertie were married. Peck, Joe, Martin, Jim and Mae still lived
and farmed with Mama. In later years
all the other children married. Jim and
Betty lived with Mama and farmed.
Then Mama built a home on Sis and Harrison's place on Belgard
Bend. Mama loved working in her vegetable and flower gardens, which were always
beautiful. She loved fishing and she
would always take a folding chair and go to Bayou Rapides and catch a few small
brem to feed her cats. Mama had many happy years after she retired. She lived to be 87 years old.
I also found out that
Henricus Thiels, father of Joseph, immigrated to America with the ship
"Marceille" from Antwerp via Bordeaux in France to New Orleans with
his wife Anne Mary Brems and his five children. This was published in the
Gazette van Detroit on 24.4.1983. If you want a copy of this article, please

Henry Thiels and Anna Maria
Brems THIELS "lived in the house of his father, Francisus, for
approximately 6 years, where the first four of his children were
born..." "The last two
children were born in their new residence, 1879...his mother, Anna, resided
with him until her death. Also living with Henricus weas a niece, Maria
Bernardina Brems and a loborer, Joannes Vanderwouier, who was born March 18,
1841."
"By 1883 both of Henricus' parents were deceased. His only brother, Augustinus, was married
and had started to raise a family; they talked and it was decided that Henricus
would take his family to the new world and his brother would follow later.
"In 1883, Henricus
and his family departed Antwerp enroute to Bordeauz, France and on to the Port
of New Orleans, arriving there on September 10, 1883 abord the S. S. Marseille. On the ship manifest there is listed those
persons other than his immediate family that accompanied them to the new
world: Bernadine Brems - age 1 1/2 yrs,
Francinia Brems - age 10 1/2 yrs., Colida Brems - age 6 and John Baptiste
VandeWaver - age 42.
Upon arrival in the port of New Orleans, Henricus and family
made their way, it is believed, by covered wagon to Many, Louisiana where they
met and spent several years with the Belgium family of John P. and Ora Lee
Ouaeyhaegen, who had arrived in America some twenty or thirty years
earlier. John died in 1910 and his
wife, who was fifteen years his junior, lived until 1943. She is recognized by the author of the
"History of Sabine Parish" by Mr. John Groves Belisle, in his book of
1912, as a principle farm owner. Mr.
James F. Ouaeyhaeghen, a grandson, now lives in Many on the old home
place. On January 19, 1884, Henriucs
contracted to purchase 240 acres of land for $800. from Monroe F. Blevins. Bernandine, Henricus's daughter, married
Alphonse Petrus December 29, 1896 in Many.
Father J. A. Augree, the first resident priest of Many, presided over
the wedding. A witness to this wedding
was J. A. Robrecht.
After selling his land, Henricus and family moved to
Alexandria. This decision was probably made some time prior to the land sale
because on August 8, 1898, Henticus, Alplhonse Petrus and J. A. Robrecht had
joined together to purchase land in Rapides Parish along Bayou Rapides,
eighty-four acres known as the "Old Race Track" for $5,000. Possession of property was to take place
January 1, 1899. This land was divided
April 30, 1904 - Henricus' share came to 35 acres. J.A. Robrechet sold 7.74 acres from his share to August Thiels on
the same day of partition dividing. On
June 15, 1907, August sold his land to Henry (7.74 acres) which brought his
total acreage to 42.74 acres.
In 1900 Henricus moved his family by covered wagon to
Alexandria. Along the way, they stopped for the night and made a lean-to of
pine sapplings and brush. The next
morning ice sickles a foot long draped from the lean-to. When they settled on their land in
Alexandria, Henricus established his home in the front portion of the old race
track barn. J.A. Robrechet, a partner
in the land holdings, then married Rose Petrus, sister of Alphonse Robrechet,
who was the 3rd partner in their land venture.
(The Robrechet family later moved to California where J.A. was killed
during W W I.). The center portion of
the old race track barn was then torn down and a home was built for J. A. on
his portion of the land which now lies along England Drive. The rear portion of the barn was then
enclosed and used as Henricus' barn for farm animals.
On January 6, 1902 Henricus put up $200. bond as security for
the marriage license between John Shall, his son, and Louisa Fillette. On January 6, 1903 they married. On January 2, 1913, John purchased 22.65
acres of land which they occupied the old home place until it was sold to
Johnny Verzwyvelt, father of Major Lynn Verzwyvelt. This home is where Louise, Lawrence, Robert, Jerome and Lucille
Thiels were born.
Shortly after Jeff Thiels was married, a new home was built
for Henricus and Mary (later to be occupied by Jerome Thiels). This home was initially located in the
approximate location of the present day "L & L Tractor Co". Henricus's wife, Mary, died December 26,
1921. In about 1925, Jeff Thiels and
family who had occupied the original home of Henricus [Thiels from Dan & Ben 2-23-03.FTW]
